Been thinking about my commentary re: Russia and Ukraine
Been thinking about some of my criticisms of Russia's recent expansionist moves. Some people, particularly on the "Left," seem to believe I have no moral right, as an American "citizen," to call out other countries when they engage in violations of human rights and international law. I think this is a total, nonsensical guilt trip. Why?
1. I've been criticizing USA's actions, both domestically and on the world stage since I was a child. In middle school, I stood up for a of a group of Japanese Americans who visited our 6th grade class. They had been interned in concentration camps from 1942-1945, on the basis of their "racial" origins. One of my classmates said he thought those Nissei deserved what they got - I vehemently disagreed. And my teacher told me he was grateful for what I said.
2. If I lack the moral right to criticize Russia just because I was born in USA, then Israelis had/have no moral right to criticize Iran's former President Ahmedinejad; British "subjects" have no moral right to criticize the often foul deeds committed by the Catholic Church in Ireland; Chinese people have no right to criticize the actions of the Japanese military during WW2, etc., etc. After all, the Israeli, British, and Chinese GOVERNMENTS are all committing or have committed their own human rights violations. The fact that I happen to live in this F*cked-up, aggressive, imperialistic society in no way precludes me from calling an injustice an injustice, wherever it may occur. In fact, people who REFRAIN from criticizing a foreign government just because their own government is culpable have actualy been "shamed" into a shameful kind of silence.
3. Americans aren't just "allowed" to use their increasingly endangered First Amendment rights to speak the truth as they perceive it - they are, in a wider sense OBLIGATED to do so.
So I STILL despise that pig Putin, and feel absolutely NO obligation to remain silent about Russia's crimes, just because I was born in Madison. Not that the Ukrainians are totally innocent, mind you, what with the fascist presence in Kiev. But there is an awful lot that is WRONG with Russia's government and Russian nationalists these days, from its continuing use of nuclear power and the very substantial Russian contribution to global climate change, to their bombing of civilian targets in Chechnya and other "breakaway republics." I believe Russia does a lot more harm than good both domestically and internationally. The country doesn't even make the pretense of representing a force for good in the world, as did the old USSR. Russia's pretty much become a Laissez Faire capitalist helhole that represses its own people, tolerates mass homelessness on the streets of Moscow, and does very little to combat the AIDS epidemic in St. Petersburg. I could go on about what's wrong with Russian society for several more paragraphs.
It's true: the USA is the World's FOREMOST Rogue State - it sure as hell isn't the only one.
